Terms of service

What you can expect from us, and what we expect from you. Written to be read, not to be survived.

Draft. This has not been reviewed by a lawyer.

It is published so you can see the shape of it and tell us what is missing. Do not rely on it, and do not treat it as the agreement between us. We will replace it with reviewed text before Akasiimo takes real money, and date it when we do.

What Akasiimo is

Akasiimo gives a creator a page and a set of links. A supporter uses them to send that creator money. We move the payment, take a share of it, and pay the rest out to the creator.

We are not a bank and we do not hold deposits. Money passing through Akasiimo belongs to the creator it was sent to, less our share and the payment provider’s costs.

Your account

  • You must be able to enter a contract, and the mobile money number you are paid out to must be in your own name.
  • One person, one account. Do not create a page that impersonates somebody else, and do not claim a handle in order to sell it.
  • You are responsible for what happens under your login. Tell us straight away if you think somebody else has it.

Fees, and what happens to a payment

There is no monthly fee and no setup fee. We take a share of each payment, and the payment provider takes a processing cost. We have not fixed our rate yet, because it depends on terms we are still negotiating. Until it is published, no real payments are possible.

When we do publish it, it will appear on the page before a supporter pays, and on every tip in your dashboard. If we change it later we will tell you before the change applies, not after.

Payouts

  • Payments collect in your balance. You request a payout and we send it to your mobile money number.
  • We may hold a payout while we look into a payment that appears fraudulent, disputed or reversed. We will tell you why, and we will not sit on it silently.
  • If a payment is reversed after we have paid you, the amount is owed back and may be taken from a later payout.

What you must not use Akasiimo for

  • Anything illegal in Uganda, or in the country your supporter is paying from.
  • Fraud, including asking for money under a false identity or for a cause that does not exist.
  • Laundering money, or moving funds you are not entitled to.
  • Content that sexualises children, incites violence, or harasses a specific person. This is not negotiable and there is no appeal.
  • Selling anything you may not lawfully sell, including weapons, drugs and counterfeit goods.

If you see a page doing any of this, report it.

Suspending or closing a page

We can suspend a page or hold its balance if we believe it is breaking these terms or the law, or if a payment provider requires it. Where we can, we will tell you what is wrong and give you a chance to answer first. Where the law or an immediate risk to somebody prevents that, we will act first and explain afterwards.

You can close your page whenever you like. Closing it does not remove financial records we are required to keep.

What we do not promise

Akasiimo will sometimes be unavailable, and payment networks fail in ways we do not control. We do not guarantee uninterrupted service, and we are not liable for income you did not earn because a network was down. What we do promise is to tell you honestly when something is broken.

Nothing here limits any right you have under Ugandan consumer law that cannot be limited by agreement.

Changes to these terms

We will post changes on this page and date them. For a change that materially affects what you are paid or what you may do, we will tell you before it takes effect.

Law, and reaching us

These terms are governed by the law of Uganda. Email legal@akasiimo.tips with anything about them.
